When God made Creation, there were no problems: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” 1 Then, God gave his wonderful creation over to the care and authority of man: “So God created man… And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” 2
Not much later in the course of events we find: “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart… Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.” 3
Then, thousands of years later we see this quote: “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we put on our prized robes of righteousness, we find they are but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves we fade, wither and fall. And our sins, like the wind, sweep us away.” 4 We also read: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” 5
Imagine that you had a beautiful home, but you had to go away for a long time. So, you find someone to stay in that home to care for it while you are gone. They are good people, respected relatives who have been very close to you. However, they become selfish, they forget that it’s really not their place, they don’t respect your wishes regarding its care and they “trash” it. That beautiful dream home becomes the worst slum shack. Now, is that your fault?
Actually, that’s what we have in this world today. The sin, suffering, injustices, tragedies, pollution, violence, crimes and problems which fill the earth all stem from man’s selfishness. Some day God is going to “settle up” with mankind in regards to how they have cared for His Earth. The fact that there are problems in life does not detract from God’s greatness but rather, they’re a reflection of the selfishness of man!
