The Bible says: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” 1 When you work a math formula there is a “yield”. When one plants crops, there is a “yield”. In like manner the Spirit of God in one’s life will produce a yield of the “fruit of the Spirit”. Real love, joy and peace are naturally produced in one’s life when God’s Holy Spirit is resident in that life.
Yes, one can know some love, joy and peace apart from God, but it is nowhere near the same. God’s perfect, unconditional love casts out all fear in our lives, His joy is indescribable and full of glory and His peace passes all understanding 2. It is like the difference between chemical laden artificially flavored “fruit drink” and the actual juice of fresh squeezed fruit – there’s just no comparison!
Do those filled what His Spirit still have problems? Sure, but God’s love, joy and peace are a driving, sustaining force that minimizes the effects of life’s problems and gives one the confidence, strength and sense of security needed to endure and overcome even the greatest challenges.
