What on Earth am I here for?

Well, the key to solving this timeless mystery is to understand that it is not about you. Most of us have the idea that we’ve got to look out for number one, protect our own interests, find out, “what’s in it for me?” We are even taught to live a self-centered life.

This results in a pursuit of personal happiness and fulfillment that never quite brings the satisfaction and abundant life that our creator has planned for us. You see, you are not an accident; you were created for a purpose. In fact, there are five main purposes which, when fulfilled, will bring all the personal joy and fulfillment one seeks.

Another principle to ponder is that this life here on earth is not all there is to our existence; this life is a temporary assignment. We are eternal creatures. No, our bodies as they are now are not eternal, but we have a component in our makeup called a soul – that is eternal. The Bible puts it this way: “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” 1 Some people in today’s humanistic society may scorn this concept; however, we see a seed of wheat planted and it totally changes into a plant that bears seed that is then taken and made into bread. No one struggles with that concept! Our lives are no different. Some day you and I will die and be “planted” in a grave, but like the wheat seed it doesn’t stop there – we will live on in a transformed body which houses our eternal soul. Yes, we will live forever! Again quoting the Bible: “But I am telling you this strange and wonderful secret: we shall not all die, but we shall all be given new bodies! It will all happen in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For there will be a trumpet blast from the sky, and all the Christians who have died will suddenly become alive, with new bodies that will never, never die; and then we who are still alive shall suddenly have new bodies too. For our earthly bodies, the ones we have now that can die, must be transformed into heavenly bodies that cannot perish but will live forever. When this happens, then at last this Scripture will come true -”Death is swallowed up in victory." 2

So, you see, this life is preparation for eternity. Jesus said this: "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.” 3 No, it isn’t about “religion”; it is about relationship. In order to know the will of our heavenly Father we need to know Him. And they way to know Him is to know His son, Jesus Christ for the scripture says: “Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me’.” 4

In addition to building our relationship with Jesus Christ, we must also be born again in preparation for eternity: “Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’." 5 “To know more about the born again experience click here”. When we are born again, we become one of God’s children and He our “father”. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
